Change

G.D.A. Obama, certainly now the likely Democratic presidential candidate, promises change. Over and over he challenges his supporters to join with him to "change this country and then we'll change the world".

I guess that's what Kerensky and, subsequently, Lenin told the Russian people.

Probably it's what Mao Zedong told the Chinese people.

Assuredly it's what Hitler told the German people.

Change. Yeah, right.

Second Thoughts

I'm still in a state of shock resulting from the primary returns here in North Carolina day before yesterday. This approaches medical shock -- damp, cool skin + fluttery, shallow heart beat -- and is not to be confused with the type of "shock" felt by G.D.A. Obama as he watched Jeremiah Wright strut his stuff at the National Press Club breakfast a few days earlier.

If I were a fighting man getting ready for patrol in Iraq [or Afghanistan], I'd damn sure be wondering what the hell I was doing fighting for a country that thought "God damn America!" was a proper slogan for my prospective commander-in-chief! And don't tell me that "Slick" Obama isn't responsible for what Jeremiah Wright says -- I know he's not! What he is responsible for is staying in that community -- that congregation -- for 20 years, providing it with his support, while this is being said!

Then, like I'm a fool, he tells me "I love this country" and expects that I'll lap it up. Good grief!

Put this SOB behind the desk that George Washington fought to win and establish?  Not this old geezer!

Disillusioned

I obviously know my fellow North Carolinians far less well than I thought.

November becomes much clearer now. Choose between a man who for 20 years refused to get up and leave when he heard his country slandered and damned and a man who for 5-1/2 years refused preferential release from captivity until everyone imprisoned before him was released.

Warts and all, is there a choice?

NC Primary Day

Well, the polls will open here in Cackolacky in just six hours!  Of course, our marquee contest is on the Democratic side between Senators Obama and Clinton.

My prediction?  Clinton in a squeaker.  Despite the fact that blacks make up 38% of donkey-side registrants, I can't bring myself to believe that North Carolinians would accept the candidacy of someone from a society that gives a standing O to a speaker who declaims "God damn America!"

My Gifts to the GOP

Back in February, when we first made the acquaintance of Jeremiah Wright, I suggested two video scenarios for campaign ads:

First Church of the Geezer, Strategist

If I were a political strategist who was opposed to Barack Obama, I'd film a couple of ads right now:

  1. A split-screen with one frame showing the picture of a beaming Obama with his arm around the smiling Jeremiah Wright and the other frame displaying that same Jeremiah Wright in the pulpit calling out "God damn America!" Caption? How about "Who will answer the 3 a.m. phone call?" Or "Blasphemer-in-Chief". There must be 100 possibilities.
  2. A cleancut African-American family -- Mom, Dad and two little girls in PJs -- bowed in prayer. One of the little girls, eyes tightly closed and hands clasped, is saying ". . .and God bless Momma and Daddy and Barack Obama and God damn America. Amen."
Wooowhee! Sign me up!

I've seen the first [in that ad of the NC Republican Party which Senator McCain wanted to squelch]. . . .I'm all atwitter to see the second!

Who cares?

Who cares what Jeremiah Wright preached from his pulpit at the Trinity Church of Christ on the south side of Chicago during the 35 years he filled it?

Not this old geezer.

Why, then, spend so much time talking about the content of those sermons and the philosophical basis (and perhaps the theological basis) for them?

A long-time parishioner of his -- who identifies Wright as someone who had great influence in shaping his own world view -- is contending for the opportunity to be the Chief Executive of the USA.

So what? The fact that someone attended there -- was married by Jeremiah Wright -- had his children baptized by Jeremiah Wright -- doesn't imply agreement with the preachings of Jeremiah Wright.

Now that is where I disagree. Jeremiah Wright moved into the pulpit of the Trinity UCC in 1972. It had 87 members. When he retired at the end of 2007, Trinity UCC had more than 5000 members and was the largest congregation in the United Church of Christ. Those 5000 members did not join there to protest the preachings of Jeremiah Wright. They joined because they visited there, heard what the preacher had to say, responded to it and decided, because of what they had heard, to make Trinity their church home.

Well, it seems reasonable that that is the basis on which the membership grew and on which individual members were attracted to the church. What formed the basis of his preachings?

Essentially, white people suck and so does the United States of America.

Wow! That's pretty strong! Are you certain that's what he preached?

Yeah. He was given a chance to showcase his "theology" the other morning at a breakfast sponsored by the National Press Club and he laid it out pretty clearly.

And you say that one of his adherents is trying to become President of the US?

That's right.

Seems to me that to elect someone with views like those to be President of the US would be like naming a pedophile to head the Boy Scouts.

Damn straight.
